Double injury blow for Arsenal
Arsenal have confirmed that Robin van Persie is expected to be sidelined until the middle of October as a result of his ankle injury. The Dutch striker was hurt in a 2-1 win over Blackburn on August 28. He was initially expected to be out for around a month, but that now looks an unrealistic prognosis. Arsenal have been dealt another injury blow with news that in-form winger Theo Walcott is set to miss two weeks. Walcott also suffered an ankle injury playing for England in a 3-1 win against Switzerland on Tuesday.

The 63-year-old former Liverpool boss replaces Martin O'Neill, who quit last month - just before the start of the season. Villa's American owner Randy Lerner has said he wanted to appoint someone with previous experience of managing in the Premier League. Houllier left Liverpool in 2004 after a six-year spell in charge and returned to France, where he coached Lyon between 2005-07. He currently has been working as the technical director of the French Football Federation.

Bulgaria boss quits job
Stanimir Stoilov has resigned as Bulgaria coach following his side's 1-0 defeat by Montenegro in Sofia on Tuesday. The result followed Bulgaria's 4-0 reverse in England in their opening EURO 2012 qualifier and leaves them bottom of Group G after two matches. The 43-year-old Stoilov, who had been in charge of the national team since January 2009, complained last week that the international retirement of Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov had left a big void up front.

Marc Burch has undergone season-ending surgery on his right foot. The D.C. United defender was hurt last week in his team's U.S. Open Cup semifinal loss to the Columbus Crew. Wayne Rooney will travel to Switzerland as planned for England's EURO 2012 qualifier, despite allegations of a sex scandal splashed across Sunday's British tabloids. So far there's been no comment from Rooney.

Dawson out 6 to 8 weeks
England defender Michael Dawson will miss six to eight weeks, after scans on Saturday revealed that he sprained his left medial knee ligament and left ankle ligament. Dawson was carried off during the second half of Friday's 4-0 win over Bulgaria. The defender was immediately withdrawn from the squad to face Switzerland on Tuesday, and return back to his club for further examination and treatment. Bolton's Gary Cahill came on as a substitute for Dawson at Wembley and could replace him in Tuesday's starting lineup. Tottenham has William Gallas and Sebastien Bassong as backup to Dawson.
